Ron Vellucci
Ron Vellucci has been making things out of wood since his childhood in New Jersey. His dad was a cabinet maker and his woodworking shop is where Ron would play, creating toys from the scraps of wood and learning woodworking skills from his dad. It was during these formative years that he learned the joy and satisfaction that comes from the process of creating something with you own hands and a dedication to craftsmanship. It wasn’t until years later, after a three month “journey of discovery” in Europe and N. Africa, that Ron returned to follow his passion in creating art and fine craft with the skills he had learned as a child.
Ron often uses a variety of materials: metal, stone, fossils, found objects, lights or digital imagery – but wood and metal are most often the primary materials.
His work celebrates the journey of the creative process born from conceptual images inspired by his imagination and realized using the tactile, organic attraction of wood, stone, metal and other natural materials. Throughout this process there is a continuing dialogue that takes place between the materials and the design, as well as a focus on enduring craftsmanship. As a result of using this “language of materials,” the finished work offers the viewer his visual message, combining the appeal of the tactile materials harmonically balanced with subtle details.
Deciding what palette of woods to use, the grain direction and figure, subtle changes in natural coloration, decisions on relief relationships, overlays or inlays, contrasts in texture, color, or material, to use subtle or dramatic detailing… these are just some of the decisions that take place throughout his creative process.
It is through these sensitive conversations that each piece is born. The closer you look, the more you will see that “language of materials.”
Ron’s work has won numerous awards and is in public, private and corporate collections throughout the United States.
